Hypnosis has become a fairly stereotyped action thanks to the media. Most people still believe that hypnotists are able to wave a watch in front of another and that customer will go into a deep sleep. There are actually much more efficient and realistic ways to hypnotize another person.
Hypnosis involves a very focussed and internal method of attitude and concentration. Being hypnotised by someone is all about becoming relaxed enough to shift your focus of attention inwards. When learning how to hypnotise yourself, you are both the hypnotist and the subject.
Firstly you will want to make yourself as comfortable as you can. You can use a chair or you can lie down, as long as you don’t get sleepy-eyed. Many people will in fact sit in a chair so that there is little enticement to fall asleep. First, start breathing slowly and regularly and let your mind empty of thoughts.
Concentrate for a while on how long you want the hypnosis to last. If you plan on staying hypnotised for 20 minutes then put your mind to it. Your body has an inner ‘clock’ that will keep track of the time for you. If you have ever woken up in the morning just minutes before your alarm you will realise you have a very dependable internal clock.
Next, think about why you want to be hypnotised. Some may want to achieve a time of inner peace. Focus on your goal so your unconscious mind will help you to work on this goal while you are in deep meditation. Saying your purpose out aloud can be a great way of fixing it in your mind.
The next step is to find three items within your surroundings which you will focus on for small periods of time. Small objects without too much detail are best. For example you could look at the corner of a desk, a small ornament or even a mark on the wall. Rest your eyes on each item. Some persons will also verbally say what they are looking at. Repeat this step with three items you can hear and then three sensations you feel. Slowly count from three to two and then to one. This process deals with the external.
Lastly, focus internally on three items you can envision, then three sounds and feelings you can envisage. When you feel like your allotted time has passed open your eyes. With more practice you will find this type of hypnotic state easier to accomplish and more effectual. With repeated practice of these steps you will quickly become an expert at how to hypnotise yourself.
